115 Ribbons I 624 Emily Dickinson

115 Ribbons I 624 Emily Dickinson

Poetry video, slideshow

The video slideshow is inspired by poem 624 by Emily Dickinson. The poem was published in 1890 by Emily Dickinson.

In this video fragments of Poem 624, accompany a sequence of 115 ribbons. The ribbons are tied around rectangular pieces of cardboard, on each piece of cardboard is written by hand the date: day, month and year.

The ribbon cards date from 1910 to 1940. Connie found the ribbons in a shoebox on a French Brocante in the Allier. She photographed the ribbons in 2013 and brought them together in a video slideshow in 2019.

The words of the poem show up in repetitive sequences.  First one or two words, than more words,  which become sentences. The visibility and duration of the words are based on the sequence of the images.

The appearance and disappearance of the images: the ribbon cardboards and with it the changing of the dates, goes in a slow pace. Combined with the words of the poem one experiences perhaps a more fleeting perception of time.
