The Large Dutch Art Calender 2024

I am pleased to announce that I am one of the 365 artists who have secured a place in the 12th edition of The Large Dutch Art Calendar 2024.

My contribution is the drawing ‘Are you at home?’

The GNKK 2024 will be festively launched on November 2nd, 2023.

Grote Nederlandse Kunstkalender 2024

The Large Dutch Art Calendar shows a different work every day on a large format, from both renowned artists and up-and-coming talent. The tear-off calendar is packed with visual art, photography, fashion, illustrations, architecture and design. Due to its different size (30 x 34 cm, almost three (!) Kilos) and contemporary content, the calendar is a must-have. Interesting for art lovers, but also for those who want to be surprised by the multifaceted range of home-grown arts.

Walks with Tatí in the Allier, France, Zeeland, the Netherlands and Monferrato, Italy.

villamiroglio, mist, monferrato,

Zomer 2024, Villamiroglio gezien vanuit Moncestino

Since 2022 Tatí and I walk the Basso Monferrato, the first line of hills south of the river Po. The hills are oddly shaped and covered with woods and vineyards. On top of the hills countless churches and castels.

In Zeeland, where my mother lives, we walk on beaches and piers and along the sea dyke around the village. Tati seems a born beachcomber, always munching little crabs.

From this dyke, you can see the flat lands laying far below the water level of the surrounding sea.

In France, until 2022, we walked through the hamlets of Beauron and Arfeuille and Chirat, the forest of Vacheresse. For long walks we descended to the Bouble.

This little river seems a shock in the landscape. The quietly rolling hills are suddenly cut of by a steep ravine. A canyon. On the bottom we follow paths along the stream.

After the rains in winter and spring it is a turmoil but in summer is mostly pebbles and rocks and a babbling brook. It feels like walking in a Schubert song.

About - Preziose miniature
The exhibition features the work of 66 Italian and foreign artists and is currently being held at the Municipal Historical Archive of Palermo. The project, curated by Stefania Balestri, showcases many forms, techniques, and materials that all share a small format.

The artists have explored this format’s inherent value and the works, with their unique individuality, come together to form a cohesive whole, much like a kaleidoscope.

Alessandra Scappini has written a text that will be included in the upcoming catalog. After the exhibition finishes in Palermo, it will travel to other cities in Italy.

My miniature - Preziosa creatura

As I was settling into my new home in Piemonte, I stumbled upon a box filled with shells I had collected since childhood, starting in 1972.

I used to love searching for shells on the beach, especially the doubles hinged on one side. Holding a double, one can’t help but wonder what kind of creature used to reside inside it.

Around 20 years ago, after a storm in Lido, Venice, I discovered hundreds, maybe thousands of doubles on the beach. It was a dream come true! Unfortunately, I couldn’t take all of them, so I filled my pockets with as many as I could.

Recently, I received an invitation from Stefania to participate in the exhibition Preziose Miniature. I decided to use the Venetian doubles from my collection for the exhibition.

As a child, I was captivated by the fairytale of The Little Mermaid by the Danish writer, Hans Christian Andersen. I’m sure every girl has at some point imagined being a mermaid. I remember practicing holding my breath underwater for as long as possible.

One of my most memorable childhood experiences was during a family holiday in Denmark. We went searching for the sculpture of the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen. We were expecting something grand, but when we found her, she turned out to be tiny, like a little girl sitting on a rock.

As a child, I enjoyed drawing simple diary sketches. I had a figurine of a little mermaid that represented me. However, I always kept her hidden until now.

From Cajeta to Circe

Between healing and magic

The Municipal Art Gallery hosts an exhibition specially designed and curated by the non-profit organization, Wind Mill, for the city of Gaeta.

In Greek and Roman mythology Gaeta is linked to Cajeta, nurse of Aeneas, mentioned by Virgil in the Aeneid and to Circe described in Homer’s Odyssey.

These two figures represent a metaphor of the various aspects of female stereotypes. The artists have been invited to create art work that investigates these myths, which represent a set of prejudices still strongly rooted in our society today.

Are you at home?

Espace Culturel La Pléiade, Commentry, 2020

The series of large drawings show big trees rooted in rocks. Rock caves and tree hollows are inhabited by hermits surrounded by their few and favourite belongings. They are inspired by a fascination for 15th, 16th century engravings of woodlands, the big oak trees in the Allier, hermits, rocks and trees, bûtoh dansers, a priest in Indonesia, my brother and the drawings of treehuts by my art school kids.

The second program, under the title Fatal Error (curated by Gioula Papadopoulou) presents 7 digital videoart works based either on signal & image transformation or on 3d representations which create imaginary, artificial worlds, illustrated through the personal gaze and the aesthetics of each artist. Rethinking the Medium: the Phantom of the Drawing

Casa Masaccio, San Giovanni Valdarno, Oct. 17 > Nov. 15, 2015

As stated in the title – which echoes a famous essay by Rosalind Krauss – Rethinking the Medium: the phantom of the drawing is not intended as a traditional exhibition on drawing, but on what we have defined as its phantom. The show focuses, indeed, on an idea of drawing in expanded field and draws inspiration from some works based on a sort of in-stallation (staging and stalled) of the sign.

Icastica, Little Italy

Arezzo, 2015

Barzagli hosts three artists within his installation Little Italy: Tiziana de Felice, Francesco Benedetti and Connie Dekker. The Dutch artist Connie Dekker shows a video projection entitled “Etude – Arcopal Lullaby – voor Marieke”. Connie Dekker works in Italy since the late ’80s where she was invited to the ‘Casa degli Artisti’ in Milan, established by the artist Luciano Fabro since 1978. From here friendships started with artists of her generation such as Liliana Moro. Connie Dekker, worked in Italy for most of the 90s. We could say that in her work there’s a hint of Italian neorealism.

LaLaLa by Melle Hammer
