Youth
Connie was born in Rotterdam, Zuid Holland and grew up in Bruinisse, Zeeland.
Education
Dekker received her MFA from Rijksakademie, Amsterdam in 1990 after a BFA in Sculpture from the Academy of Arts St. Joost, Breda (the Netherlands). In 1987, she was an Artist in Residence at the Casa degli Artisti in Milan, directed by Luciano Fabro and Hidetoshi Nagasawa.
Work: Mixed Media
Since 2000, Connie Dekker has been creating works across drawing, performance, photography, and video. Her series of embroidery-focused performances have been staged and exhibited in Italy, showcasing her unique approach to storytelling through art.
Connie Dekker has developed a multifaceted practice encompassing installation, performance, video, photography, and drawing.
Throughout the 1990s, Dekker initiated large-scale embroidery installations exploring themes of waiting and absence, utilizing repetitive motifs reminiscent of traditional embroidery techniques. Since 2000, her work has expanded to include drawing, performance, photography, and video. Notably, she staged a series of embroidery-focused performances in Italy, exemplified by “Lo soffia il cielo, cosí” in 2003 at the Rocca of Carmignano, which combined poetry and performance to delve into themes of waiting and absence.
Dekker’s recent series, “Into the Trees,” features drawings of weathered trees and their inhabitants, highlighting the symbiotic relationship between nature and its dwellers. Her work often reflects personal history and heritage, as seen in “The Garden of Speech,” an ongoing embroidery project memorializing her father by stitching his drawings onto textiles.

About - Preziose miniature
The exhibition features the work of 66 Italian and foreign artists and is currently being held at the Municipal Historical Archive of Palermo. The project, curated by Stefania Balestri, showcases many forms, techniques, and materials that all share a small format.
The artists have explored this format’s inherent value and the works, with their unique individuality, come together to form a cohesive whole, much like a kaleidoscope.
Alessandra Scappini has written a text that will be included in the upcoming catalog. After the exhibition finishes in Palermo, it will travel to other cities in Italy.
My miniature - Preziosa creatura
As I was settling into my new home in Piemonte, I stumbled upon a box filled with shells I had collected since childhood, starting in 1972.
I used to love searching for shells on the beach, especially the doubles hinged on one side. Holding a double, one can’t help but wonder what kind of creature used to reside inside it.
Around 20 years ago, after a storm in Lido, Venice, I discovered hundreds, maybe thousands of doubles on the beach. It was a dream come true! Unfortunately, I couldn’t take all of them, so I filled my pockets with as many as I could.
Recently, I received an invitation from Stefania to participate in the exhibition Preziose Miniature. I decided to use the Venetian doubles from my collection for the exhibition.
As a child, I was captivated by the fairytale of The Little Mermaid by the Danish writer, Hans Christian Andersen. I’m sure every girl has at some point imagined being a mermaid. I remember practicing holding my breath underwater for as long as possible.
One of my most memorable childhood experiences was during a family holiday in Denmark. We went searching for the sculpture of the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen. We were expecting something grand, but when we found her, she turned out to be tiny, like a little girl sitting on a rock.
As a child, I enjoyed drawing simple diary sketches. I had a figurine of a little mermaid that represented me. However, I always kept her hidden until now.

The Municipal Art Gallery hosts an exhibition specially designed and curated by the non-profit organization, Wind Mill, for the city of Gaeta.
In Greek and Roman mythology Gaeta is linked to Cajeta, nurse of Aeneas, mentioned by Virgil in the Aeneid and to Circe described in Homer’s Odyssey.
These two figures represent a metaphor of the various aspects of female stereotypes. The artists have been invited to create art work that investigates these myths, which represent a set of prejudices still strongly rooted in our society today.

Barzagli hosts three artists within his installation Little Italy: Tiziana de Felice, Francesco Benedetti and Connie Dekker. The Dutch artist Connie Dekker shows a video projection entitled “Etude – Arcopal Lullaby – voor Marieke”. Connie Dekker works in Italy since the late ’80s where she was invited to the ‘Casa degli Artisti’ in Milan, established by the artist Luciano Fabro since 1978. From here friendships started with artists of her generation such as Liliana Moro. Connie Dekker, worked in Italy for most of the 90s. We could say that in her work there’s a hint of Italian neorealism.

The Large Dutch Art Calender
De Grote Nederlandse Kunstkalender (The Large Dutch Art Calendar) shows a different work every day on a large format, from both renowned artists and up-and-coming talent. The tear-off calendar is packed with visual art, photography, fashion, illustrations, architecture and design. Due to its different size (30 x 34 cm, almost three (!) LaLaLa by Melle Hammer
De publicatie LaLaLa van ontwerper Melle Hammer draagt de ondertitel(s): Typografie, Centrifuge en Grootboek. Het is een woest ogende maar precieze collage van observaties, werkstukken en intieme ervaringen met betrekking tot die rare wriemels die wij letters noemen en hoe die – mits goed gerangschikt – een brug kunnen vormen van de hand van een auteur naar het hoofd van een lezer.

My gang will get you
In 1997 Walter made a trip to Spitsbergen. He asked several artists to accompany him by giving him a small work suitable to fit in his suitcase. In some way, he showed the work in Spitsbergen. Documentation: A video registration which was presented in Vrieshuis Amerika, Amsterdam.

Tiong Ang asked artists to make a 1-minute video presentation. The video compilation of all presentations was presented in Thread Waxing Space in New York and Proton ICA in Amsterdam.

Vedute (1991) was founded with the purpose to build up a collection of 3D-manuscripts: a library of three dimensional objects as visualized thoughts that make the concept of space accessible and tangible. 44 x 32 x 7 cm.
